Hot Weather, Ensure Sufficient Electrolytes!
Fri 4 July 2025 by Lewis Wiggins
It feels like summer already, but we’re still in May. Temperatures are higher than normal, which means drinking more than usual!
To exercise comfortably and for longer periods in these temperatures, it’s crucial to get enough fluids and electrolytes.
Don’t underestimate the effect of warmer weather. Maintain good hydration, as it definitely contributes to a pleasant and safe journey. Maxim Sports Drink is the ideal sports drink and thirst quencher for cyclists.
Drinking well is important because:
- Fluids and electrolytes help regulate heat and prevent overheating
- Fluids and electrolytes maintain your blood pressure
- Fluids and electrolytes are necessary for optimal metabolism! Without fluids, no energy!
- Fluids and electrolytes support digestion and proper carbohydrate absorption
Water or Sports Drink, What should You Drink in Hot Weather?
In hot and humid weather, we lose fluids more quickly through perspiration. Timely replenishment of fluids, energy, and salts is essential for proper metabolism and muscle function. Electrolytes are minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium, and support many bodily processes. They form salt compounds that help retain fluid in the body and prevent it from being immediately flushed out. To maintain your fluid balance, it’s important not to drink water alone. Preferably choose a sports drink with a good carbohydrate ratio and optimal electrolyte concentration that immediately replenishes what you’ve lost.
Maxim Sports Drink is an ideal thirst quencher and sports drink due to its unique hypotonic nature and natural composition. A good guideline is to drink 750 ml of Maxim Sport Drink per hour.
Additionally, you can take in extra energy and electrolytes through solid food in the form of a Blue Nana Energy Bar or Blue Nana Energy Gel Bite. Besides carbohydrates, they also contain extra electrolytes, but don’t eat too many sugars. 1 Blue Nana Energy Bar combined with 750 ml Maxim Sports Drink per hour is more than sufficient.
From experience, we know that eating solid food during intense exercise and in high temperatures can be challenging. A good alternative to an energy bar or other solid food is a Maxim Gel Drink. Especially in the final hour, with the finish line in sight and an empty water bottle, you can take 1 or 2 Maxim Energy Gel Drinks for an extra energy boost.
